MS-456 PVG BARLOW’S WHEEL
To show the conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy.
Consist of a star shaped copper disc of 90 mm. diameter rotatable
vertically on a pair of adjustable centre plate. Disc can be adjusted
on a vertical metal pillar of 75 mm. height, connected to one of the
two terminals mounted on wooden base having four rubber feet.
Disc dips into a small plastic mercury trough between the vertical
limbs of a small horse shoe magnet. Size of base 150 x 100 mm.
Operates on 4 v 1.8. Supplied without mercury.
BARLOW’S WHEEL
For demonstrating the conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy.
The metal Star shaped wheel is connected in a circuit with 4 mm socket terminals and a pool of mercury, The wheel can be raised out of the mercury to break the circuit, or lowered into the mercury to complete the circuit by adjusting the height on rod.
When the circuit is complete, a horseshoe magnet positioned around the wheel provides a magnetic field that interacts with the magnetic field created by the electric current, making the wheel move.
