FLY WHEEL

A flywheel is a mechanical device which stores energy in the form of rotational momentum. Torque can be applied to a flywheel to cause it to spin, increasing its rotational momentum. This stored momentum can then be used to apply torque to any rotating object, most commonly machinery or motor vehicles.

It consists of a heavy Metal wheel mounted on the axle and the axle is supported on small bearing.

The flywheel is mounted in its bearings with its axle horizontal and at a suitable height from the ground.A string carrying a suitable mass m at its one end and having a length less than the height of the axle from the ground, is wrapped completely and evenly round the axle. When the mass is released, the string unwinds itself, thus setting the flywheel in rotation.

Students experiments in Physics labs involving a flywheel rotated by the force of gravity on a mass
Comprising of carefully machined and balanced cast iron wheel and steel spindle is supported on ball bearings in strong iron brackets. The wheel is smoothly painted black or chrome painted and is marked with a line. A pointer is fixed to one of the brackets. Diametric hole is drilled in the shaft to take a pin and cord. Strong casted metal base is provided with four holes so that the apparatus can be fixed to wall. Complete with cord and hook.
